Game of thrones - hbo's thrilling epic historical fantasy series - has finally come to an end after eight seasons, and the finale brings the story full circle in many ways. the show ends with the iron throne destroyed, the old system of choosing kings and queens eradicated, bran stark elected as the new king of westeros, and sansa stark ruling the north as an independent kingdom.. The real reason game of thrones ended after season 8. after nearly a decade on television, hbo's game of thrones – based on the song of ice and fire series written by george r.r. martin — came. In the end, ‘game of thrones’ just didn’t have enough time looked at through that lens, the inconsistency of the last few seasons — and season 8 in particular — makes a lot of sense..
Speaking to rolling stone, the author - who is yet to finish the game of thrones novels - said: "the major points of the ending will be things i told them five or six years ago..
